Prior to commissioning a portrait a few factors should be considered:

1 - What is the desired size of the finished, framed artwork?

When considering the size of the portrait, please consider the finished size when framed. An 8" x 10" charcoal or pastel will be an 11" x 14" or larger when placed in a mat and frame.


2 - What will be the best medium to use to illustrate my dog?

Are the provided photos color or black and white? Does the dog have distinctive and/or distinguished markings that deserve to be featured in color? Maybe the dogs markings contrast enough to portray in black and white as well. Pricing of the artwork depends on the medium used as well the size.

MEDIUMS: charcoal, pastel, acrylic
SIZES: 8" x 10", 11" x 14", 16" x 20"


3 - Should the portrait be a head study or full body?

Do the provided photos reveal an attractive pose for a full body portrait? Does the dog have a fabulous unique expression? What is most endearing about the dog?


4 - Should the background be simple or detailed?

A simple background is usually the most desirable for a portrait because it will enhance rather than distract from the subject. However, occasionally, a dog has a history that needs to be portrayed, or a special toy or object that brings sentiment to the portrait that may want to be included.


5 - What is the cost of presentation?

An acrylic painting should be framed with an open frame deep enough to hide and hold a standard canvas. Styles and colors are available to compliment most any decor. A charcoal or pastel portrait will require archival mounting, spacer between mat and artwork, glass, and a sturdy frame.


6 - Photo editing is available!

Consider optional editing of the finished artwork for possible future reproduction on products and gifts such as note cards, mugs, jewelry, key chains, ornaments, apparel, etc.
